The final year of my master’s was spent in studio DS15. DS15 is an experimental studio that works with chance and embraces the unintentional. We were encouraged to generate work in a variety of forms such as drawing, making, performance, and sound. These creative processes may be speculative, practical, or collaborative however, all were useful and to be utilised.
Joining DS15 marked a pivotal chapter in my architectural journey and significantly enriched my educational experience. Within this dynamic group, I discovered a sense of belonging and fulfillment, coming full circle in my artistic pursuits. DS15 fostered an environment that celebrated creativity and encouraged the integration and application of the artistic skills I had nurtured throughout my academic and adult years. The studio’s ethos went beyond the conventional norms of architectural education, promoting a mindset that embraced diversity, innovation, and the amalgamation of various artistic disciplines. This holistic approach broadened my perspective and allowed me to cultivate a more versatile skill set. The tutors’ commitment to fostering an atmosphere of exploration empowered me to think beyond the conventional and challenge preconceived notions.
We spent the year converting Wormwood Scrubs prison in Hammersmith and Fulham into a place where a collective society of our choice could live and work. We endeavoured to break out of this restrictive building type through demolition, reuse, radical retrofit, and more to support and nurture our chosen group of people - Creating social control through architecture. The main brief for the year was titled WHAT’S THE POINT IF WE CAN’T HAVE FUN. The studio’s playful and thought-provoking philosophy enabled us to establish and form a built environment, connecting people with place. We worked through several briefs throughout the year that helped construct and develop our final master plan.
My group chose to convert this existing correctional facility into The Garden of Eves to support all women who have experienced the criminal justice system or who are at risk of entering it. The project aimed to build confidence, resilience, and well-being, transforming these women's lives through a safe and nurturing environment. A shout-out to Sean Griffiths and Kester Rattenbury for a wonderful year!
